In this module of the course, we explore anatomy and neurology at an introductory level to give us the vocabulary and theory to go deeper into how our brains and bodies work together and impact our relationships to ourselves and others.
A famous motivational speaker and business leader once said that “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” This is catchy and research does show that who you spend time with influences what you do and how you feel. However, more recent studies would suggest it’s not just the five people you spend the most time with but all the people surrounding you that influence you.
“Perhaps the most telling study was of happiness. The two researchers found that happy friends make you happier — no surprise there. But if your friend of a friend of a friend is happy with their life, then you have a 6 percent greater likelihood of being happy yourself. Now six percent might not seem like much, but consider that other studies suggest that if I gave you a $10,000 raise, that would only trigger about a 2 percent increase in your happiness.”
